Explore Edisto Outdoors
Slather on your sunscreen, pack a sack lunch or a picnic basket and get out and explore the great outdoors. Consider making a day-trip, or even staying overnight at Edisto Beach State Park. Onsite accommodations range from simple beachfront campgrounds to cabins among live oak forests with marshland views. Wander South Carolina's longest system of handicapped friendly walking and biking trails and catch a glimpse of white-tailed deer, alligators or even elusive bobcats and then get in out of the heat at the park's environmental education center. Don't miss the mysterious and secluded 4,000-year-old shell mound, the Spanish Mount along a bend in Scott's creek. Watch out for snakes, bugs, ticks and mosquitoes, and don't touch the artifacts (reference 2).
Learn About Local Wildlife
Take an educational day to get informed about local wildlife in and around Edisto Island. Grab an illustrated guide and try to identify as many species as possible without getting too close the fauna as you explore on foot. Don't miss the Edisto Island Serpentarium, a popular educational attraction and a great place to see reptiles close up. Inside the Serpentarium observe venomous and non-venomous snakes, tree frogs and baby alligators in a detailed natural habitat. Outside, try to conceal your awe as you peak over low-walled enclosures to observe snakes hanging from trees, vines and stumps as well as box turtles, and other reptiles.
